- If the rice cakes are hardened or chilled, soak them in warm water for about 20 minutes. Make 2-inch long slices out of the fish cake, cabbage, and scallions.
- Make a broth with anchovies. In a large pan, add the anchovy broth (or water). Combine the sauce ingredients in a mixing bowl. In a shallow pot over medium high heat, bring the soup stock to a boil, then mix in the tteokbokki sauce with a spatula to dissolve it. Make sure the red chili pepper paste is completely dissolved (gochujang).
- Add the rice cakes to the boiling seasoned stock. Boil for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the rice cakes are soft and the sauce has thickened. To keep the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom of the pan, stir them often.
- Combine the veggies and fish cakes. Continue to cook for another 4 to 6 minutes, stirring regularly. Depending on the rice cakes, extra time may be required to get the ideal amount of softness. If required, add more broth or water.
- Alternatively, you can add the sesame oil, sesame seeds, and green onion to the above and mix briefly.
- Taste the sauce and, if necessary, adjust the seasoning. Serve immediately while still warm.
